How do you turn a young nonprofit with a popular mission and lots of small donors into a sustainable enterprise that can focus even more clearly on changing the world? Major gifts, that’s how. I worked with Just City Executive Director Josh Spickler for nearly a year to hone his message, make him more comfortable asking for big gifts and help him get used to the continuous work of cultivating and nurturing donor relationships. Spickler — an attorney and terrific writer — already knew how to advocate for criminal justice reform and hold those in power accountable. I helped him recognize how to get donors and funders to support those goals and worked with staff and board members to organize them for the future health of the organization.
